Our History

My family’s connection to Aravada Springs and the Gold Butte commenced when in 1910 my great-grandfather, G. Luke Whitney drove his wagon to Aravada from St. Thomas and bought Aravada from Bert Nay for $1,500. My grandfather, G. Fenton Whitney, was just ten years old when his father bought the ranch. In 1922 My mother, Julia Whitney Rawlins was born in St. Thomas and lived at Aravada year round until she started school then she spent her summers at Aravada until she was ten years old. At which time, (1932) the federal government bought out the town of St. Thomas as part of the Hoover Dam building project because it was going to be flooded by Lake Mead. This agreement transaction greatly improved their circumstances. My grandfather Fenton was able to buy a farm in Hurricane, Utah. He was also able to buy a house, a new car and put $1,000 in the bank.

As part of this move, Grandfather Fenton sold his share of Aravada ranch to his sister Flora Whitney Nay. Eventually, Flora's son Keith Nay, bought Aravada. Then In 2017 I was able to purchase Aravada from Keith’s wife and since that time I have worked to restore the ranch and save the historic buildings and build a campground, so that others can enjoy the beauty, solitude and history of the area.
